The Wart

Warts were traditionally associated with witches, so when Evangeline got one, she thought optimistically that maybe some power was developing. Over the years, the girl maintained hope, tinged with other emotions. «I hope it makes me invisible,» she thought, as she went downstairs for breakfast on her first day of school.

Evangeline walked with her head down the hallway. She couldn’t help but feel the stares of people at her wart; not much could be said about her morning either, her head was so low that she could only describe the floors and pipes. Turning right, to math class, she would again have to stand up and face a crowd that would only see the black spot on her face. A tear rolled to her lips surrounding her wart, and sometimes the greatest fear one can feel is showing oneself as we really are. Just when that thought crossed her mind, someone else crossed her path. The bump threw her to the ground leaving her like a turtle on her back and changing her perspective and panorama from the floor to the sky.

«I’m sorry, it was my fault,» said the boy as he offered his hand for Evangeline to get up. He smiled and looked her in the eyes; she couldn’t help but notice the huge gap in his two front teeth, in addition to his confidence and assurance.

«I’m on my way to math, and you?» said the young man, still smiling.

«Me too,» she replied.

This event brought a smile back to Evangeline, and in the end, she felt that this exchange of smiles was what really freed something in her. She didn’t know if they were her long-awaited powers, but the sun warmed her face and a couple of formulas and math problems didn’t sound so bad anymore.
