Divine Lightness

«Of all the creatures God created in the universe, humans were granted free will,» said the angel as he observed humanity. Intrigued, he jumped from the balcony, spread his huge and beautiful wings, and gracefully descended to earth.

He landed on the terrace of a huge building and excitedly looked through a window. On the other side, a woman typed with an expressionless gaze. After a few seconds, the woman made a movement with her neck from side to side and, upon looking towards the terrace window, stopped her work and approached to observe. Due to her divine nature, the woman couldn’t see the angel, but little she knew, they were face to face, separated by just a window. The angel, unable to understand the reason, watched as the woman returned to her desk to type. He felt all the frustration of the woman coursing through his angelic body, and frightened by that sensation, he took flight.

Down the street walked an agitated man consumed by his phone, with his head down to coordinate his pace with the conversation. A feeling of frustration unknown to the angel continued to invade him. As a desperate measure and to change the situation, the angel drew a rainbow in the sky. The man didn’t notice the gesture; he remained immersed in his phone, shouting and speeding up his pace in tune with the conversation.

Down and confused, the angel tried to take flight again and return to the sky, but the weight of the new feeling threw him to the ground; the lightness of his divinity was surpassed by the frustration of ungrateful humanity. Tired, he sat on a bench to watch people pass by, analyzing the situations and diving into a series of theories about why humanity squandered the gifts that had been given to them. Why don’t they live, why do they complicate everything so much, why did God pour his grace into these beings, the angel repeated in his head, while he lost his brightness, submerged in anguish, and became one more.

Suddenly, a hand caressed what remained of his wings. There was a child beside him. «How beautiful!» he said, pointing with his other hand. «Have you seen the rainbow?» The angel nodded and smiled; suddenly, he felt lighter.
